weoutdoor: Emil from VELONODE just asked us for some tips to create a team. It is in our opinion, one of the most interesting topic for AMATEURS cyclist. Cycling is a team game (if we can call it game) even you can ride alone or race alone. cycling in group is always better experience, even you are racing, training or just routing. We can give you some tips from the experience to creating COMM FIXED TEAM that worked for two years and got good sponsors, but from our side, we are going to focus on the apparel and design for a team. In brief, there are some base question you have to got pretty clear before create a custom design for your team: 1. How many boys/girls of your team are going to be really committed? 2. What is the message you are going to throw to the world? 3. Context in which you are going to race? 4. Logos and sponsors. 1. Union makes force but there is always a optimized number of member of a operative team. It is usually depending of what kind and level of races are you going to make, but less than 3 riders is not really a team. More than 5-6 riders carries always a bit more complicated management. * A sponsor for apparel is much more easy to get for 3 or 4 riders than 8. * You have to delegate the design process to one or two riders as maximum. If is the brand who develop the design, they have to be revised for one or two riders. Too many people reviewing the design takes time. The creation process need to be fast, stretching this creation time turns off impulse and momentum. * Last tip for point 1, stay together always. During the races if you can, before and after. While competing, the images of a small group riders together in a line and waring same kit, empowers you and call the attention. 2. Did you got already a motto? an inspiration aim¿? For us, this point is most important because it gives us the key for the kit design. A good design must represent the message that the whole team can throw to the world. That mean that the key design must be departing from a cool/crazy inspiration, a classic inspiration, a super racing inspiration… We have created several “corporative image” for the team, before created the kit design. A shield, a naming, a lettering, etc, everything counts. And all that component must work in same direction (together or separated) for example: TOPANA Team (we made past year). Topana is almost an acornym for the sentence: Todo para nada (all effort is for nothing -literal translate) -> We could express as: Training a lot, but it is useless They totally trust us to develops their Road Amateur Team Image from a strong idea they was feeling: Training a lot, but it is useless because on national races the have to compete against ex-pro or other with doubtful doping background. An Amateur is just a working man, with enough passion for cycling to get time everyday for training, but normally far away from those ex-pro profile riders. BRANDING DEVELOPING + Read HERE the whole corporative proyect, or see HERE more pictures from this energy design. 3. Context in which you are going to race Cycling discipline for sure determines the products: kits, speed suit, skin suits with or whitout pockets, etc. But think a bit about the context in terms of LANDSCAPE, LUMINOSITY or how or riders make groups into that races (in line, peloton, one by one, etc). All that can also bring you keys for your team Custom design. Not difficult to understand that if you are racing in Red Hook Criterium you have to make a design totally different than if you are racing on Mountain Bike races. To be visible in RHC, you should bring light colors taking in count its context parameters: night context with low luminosity, riders usually in line, a lot of “information” in all backgrounds (sponsors, many people, lot of colors), lot of flashes for pic (light colors reflex much stronger the flashes). 4. Logos and sponsors Lastly, even if it could seem a pittance. Don’t carry the design of logos from sponsors. Your team are the base of everything. Normally sponsors need you, not your team need them. Determinate the place of the possible sponsors before speak with them. IT IS BETTER a few sponsor strong than a lot small. May be they ask for a better place in the apparel or a bigger size. Don’t be afraid to say NO. As professionals, it must be one or two main logos, the others must be small size and placed on secondary sites. You, Team are the boss. WORK HARD. RIDE FAST
